While democratization and the following election of pro-sharia politicians brought hope of the brighter potential, communities over the Northeast remained largely dependent on subsistence agriculture and mired in poverty. Arguably, democratization did not act as an equalizer but relatively entrenched the divide between the haves and also have-nots.
